Research Operations

Independently led by research assistant, Wayne Phung, this project investigates how senior researchers and students collect, manage, and retrieve research data for an optimized project workflow.

Current Status

This project has been de-prioritized and more involvement and explorement is needed to drive the project forward. If you’re interested in engaging with this project, please contact Wayne Phung at wphung@ucsd.edu.

Team Engagement with Data Management

Understanding how the group engages with project work can be broken down into three aspects.

Data Collection & Cataloguing

Document people’s ideas and actions into different files that get organized and stored for continuous research use.

Data Analysis

Revisit files to discover and extract key findings and insights to address research goals and questions.

Data Publishing and Retrieval

Findings and insights to be represented in malleable and easily understandable ways for both researchers and other people to recall and modify.

Project Approach So Far

The majority of research within this project involved many different topics.

Understanding People’s Needs

Conversations with senior researchers of the group revealed their need to better manage their research work, including previous project work.

Currently also trying to understand student needs from interviews.

Understanding Research Activities and Work

Conversations with senior researchers of the group revealed their need to better manage their research work, including previous project work.

At the moment, understanding student needs from 1-on-1 interviews would lend itself insights about group members’ perspectives of Automation Playground.

Exploring Existing Solutions

Trying out different solutions for manipulating data, such as pivot tables on Google sheets, and data visualization software like Tableau Public, gives an understanding of how resources available can leverage research needs.
